As a county, schools are closed until the Governor lifts the “Stay-at-Home” order.  Once lifted, a decision will be made as to when we open schools.

How do I access the packets on your website?

How do I access the packets on your website?

Why are we getting packets of curriculum when other schools are able to provide everything online?

Why are we getting packets of curriculum when other schools are able to provide everything online?

34% of the students that we serve have access to consistent Internet usage whereby they can engage with online school work.  In addition, many families who do have Internet are having to save the bandwidth for their own work or college and high school students who only have online options available to them.  As a result, we have embraced the paper packet option for the families that we serve.  In addition, we provide the same curriculum option in an interactive digital platform to meet the needs of the families who do have Internet availability.  For our families who have sent their children to other parts of the state or country to stay with family, we provide a digital download of the paper packet of materials on our website to meet their needs.
Why are students submitting only one piece of demonstration of understanding for each subject and only receiving feedback and not a grade?

Why are students submitting only one piece of demonstration of understanding for each subject and only receiving feedback and not a grade?

The state is no longer tracking attendance or grades for students in TK-8 and because we know that we can no longer control the level or quality of instruction provided at home; providing grades would not be equitable or fair for all students.  Our goal is to provide enough practice to keep your child learning as well as feedback to be sure they are on the right track.  When school resumes, we will be assesing all students and then adjusting our instruction accordingly.
What are the teachers responsible for?

What are the teachers responsible for?

Our teachers are responsible for planning and preparing both the 10 day packets as well as managing their Google Classroom and interactive digital learning platforms for students who can engage in this way.  Additionally, they are responsible to hold office hours 3 days a week for 2 hours at time.  Finally, they are monitoring all of this daily.

My child seems behind in reading. What can I do?

My child seems behind in reading. What can I do?

Reading with and to your child is always a good idea.  Nonfiction and informational text can actually increase reading skills and vocabulary quicker (Magazines, newspapers, on-line articles are all great).  Having them write daily will reinforce and improve their reading as well.  Finally you can contact your child’s teacher to request reading resources at your child’s level.
Why are you asking my child to do online learning when we have heard so much about screen time not being good for them?

Why are you asking my child to do online learning when we have heard so much about screen time not being good for them?

Online learning is just one option.  The same or very similar material is available in the packets.
Do we know of any resources available for our families that are in need of the internet but don’t have it?

Do we know of any resources available for our families that are in need of the internet but don’t have it?

We have researched companies that provide Internet services and few of them service our area.  Most of those are satellite Internet providers.
Why is there no direct teacher instruction available in the online format as I see so many other school districts where students are receiving instruction from their teachers this way?

Why is there no direct teacher instruction available in the online format as I see so many other school districts where students are receiving instruction from their teachers this way?

Because only 34% of our students have internet access, we cannot provide direct teacher instruction in an online format like Google Hangout; it would be inequitable to do so for the majority of our students who do not have this option.  Many rural school districts are in the same situation, and the federal and state government are working on a long-term solution to this problem (CA Task Force to Close Digital Divide).  We urge you to write to Assemblyman James Gallagher or Senator Jim Neilsen and explain the needs of our rural community. Our school district does not support using the Zoom platform with students or for any meetings.  The FBI has warned against using Zoom, and we are adhering to that recommendation.
What am I supposed to have my child do each day for school work?

What am I supposed to have my child do each day for school work?

Including in your child’s packet or Google Classroom, your child’s teacher should be including directions about the work expected.  That said, in many cases your child’s day/week can be flexible.  Ideally they should be spending 1.5 to 3 hours daily depending on the grade level.  If they want to spend more time to free up other days they can do that.
How are you communicating with families because I don’t see much communication?

How are you communicating with families because I don’t see much communication?

All information is available on our website at evergreenusd.org.  Additionally we are sending daily/weekly messages using email.   Teachers are also connecting with families using phone calls, email, Google Classroom, office hours and information sent home with the packets.  If you have any questions regarding any of this, please contact the District Office at 347-3411 or email us at eusdweb@evergreenusd.org.

Teacher's office hours should have been communicated to you already, but if not, they will be posted on our District website very soon.

What about graduation?

We are working on the details regarding graduation and will have several contingency plans to respond to any easing or lifting of the governor’s stay at home order.  Information will come out as we get closer to the end of the year.  We plan on keeping the graduation celebration dates the same so please block those out.
