Introduction

Evergreen Union School District is a five-school rural district located in northern Tehama County, 140 miles north of Sacramento, California. We cover a geographic area of approximately 575 square miles, and our northern boundary is the Shasta-Tehama County line. We are bordered on the east by the Sacramento River and on the west by the Shasta, Trinity and Tehama boundaries.

The Evergreen Union School District opened its doors in 1953.  Prior to that time, and from the late 1800’s, it had been called the Cottonwood Schoolhouse and was located on the south side of Bowman Road, west of Interstate 5 in Tehama County.  Many people referred to the Schoolhouse as the Barry School because John Barry had donated the land on which it was located.

Evergreen Union School District opened its campus at the 19415 Hooker Creek Road location and served students from Kindergarten through 8th grade in 1953.  In 1994, the Middle School Campus was completed at the 19500 Learning Way location, and 5th through 8th grade students were moved there, providing more space for the growing number of students.  In 2006, Evergreen created a Community Day School for students who needed an alternative educational setting and expanded their Preschool to meet the needs of the growing population of young children in the community.  Bend Elementary, located 16 miles south in Red Bluff, CA, was a small, independent rural District that lapsed into Evergreen in 2012. Evergreen Institute of Excellence, a Charter School, opened its doors in 2015 and also resides at the 19500 Learning Way location.

The District serves nearly 1250 students, daily, throughout our various schools and programs from preschool through high school. Those students reflect the diversity of our community and the northern California region, with 70% being White, 18% Hispanic, 7% of two or more races, and 3% Native American. Nearly 56% of our students are low income, 10% are Students with Disabilities, 10% are Homeless, 5% are English learners, and 2% are Foster Youth.

Evergreen Union School District is known for its inviting campuses, strong community values, and a staff who provides a quality education for the diverse population of students we serve. Social/emotional learning and physical and health education are an integral part of the student educational experience in addition to English Language Arts and Mathematics. Our schools promote creativity and curiosity, where literacy is embedded into Science and Social Science content areas.
